Autonomous or “driverless” vehicles are a critical development in transport technology and a key area of research for WMG. A newly commissioned drive-in driver-in-the-loop multi-axis simulator and other advanced instrumentation, place it at the forefront of the field and as such, further expert capability is sought in the field of onboard data handling. The post will complement existing expertise in augmented environments, advanced propulsion systems, cyber-security, HMI, and experiential engineering.
Applications are sought from experienced academics with an established body of research in areas related to data handling, from a range of sources that embrace machine learning. They will have an international recognition for published work as well as a sustained history of obtaining grant funding, familiarity with working alongside industrial partners, and the ability to operate in a collegiate manner with academics from other disciplines. Crucially, they will be passionate about the future of autonomous vehicles and WMG’s role in delivering solutions to some of the technological challenges that R&D in this area will face.
JOB PURPOSE:
With a passion and genuine desire to make a difference you will provide academic leadership in the field of autonomous vehicle research, working with WMG’s broad range of industrial partners. The activity will focus on the challenges that need to be overcome before fully autonomous vehicles move from concept to commercialisation. The post holder will be expected to engage with WMG’s existing academic and industrial collaborators as well as establish new partnerships. They will also undertake teaching and collegiate activities (including administrative) to support the work of WMG and its partners.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To lead and develop a portfolio of collaborative research and teaching activities in the field of autonomous or ‘driverless’ vehicles. This will include taking on the research challenges, including developing technical solutions that are affordable and dependable; establishing an appropriate legal and ethical framework; and achieving customer acceptance of the technology.
- To work with other senior staff and industrial collaborators in the National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC) to exploit collaborative opportunities in research and education.
- To develop an expert capability at WMG in onboard data handling (to embrace machine learning methods) to complement existing expertise in augmented environments, advanced propulsion systems, cyber-security, HMI, and experiential engineering, and also to develop a strategic plan to capitalise on the exploitation of this data.
- To develop collaborative relationships with leading industrial organisations and other user organisations and with other academic groups worldwide, positioning Warwick as an international player in the field of autonomous vehicle research.
- To develop successful major programme applications to external funding bodies.
- To supervise PhD/EngD and MSc student projects and contribute to teaching programmes as appropriate.
- To publish research output in high quality academic journals, leading international conferences and high profile professional and public interest events and publications.
- To contribute to other collegiate activities (including administrative) within WMG and the University to support the work of WMG and its partners.
