Job Purpose
We are seeking an academic with an outstanding record to join our staff as Professor of International Defence Engagement (IDE). The person appointed will have an excellent record of teaching, research and publication. He/she will be expected to make a strong contribution and enhance the University’s professional standing, reputation and impact. Candidates will have a PhD in contemporary security studies fields such as Public Policy, International Relations, Political Science, Institutional Governance, Defence and Security Strategy and reform.
The Professor of International Defence Engagement (IDE) will be responsible for:
- Forging an active research agenda, aligned with Cranfield’s research strategy and publishing in relevant high quality peer reviewed journals
- Generating bids for research funding to various bodies including research councils, industry and government
- Recruitment to PhD topics in the field of International Defence Engagement
- Identification of new educational requirements in IDE studies internationally
- Ongoing development and delivery of a range of educational interventions in the UK and internationally
- Supervision of post graduate students at Masters and Doctoral level
- Building key relationships with external stakeholders and clients/partners which includes governmental agencies, public policy organisations, civil service sectors and D&S relevant industrial organisations in the UK and internationally
Key Deliverables
- To lead and maintain internationally competitive research by developing own research programme at the cutting edge of the subject area
- To become an internationally renowned Centre for research and practice
- To play a leading role in identifying and securing external funding through research grants and other income generating activities
- To publish research outcomes in high impact international journals and to disseminate the results through conferences and workshops
- To collaborate with both academic partners and user groups to deliver research impact
- To contribute to the strategic planning and implementation of the University
- To provide subject specific and research related expert advice and guidance to strengthen the research environment in the school and University
- To mentor and support research staff and students
- To attract and supervise research students and post-doctoral researchers
- To contribute to curriculum/course development as a senior member of staff working closely with the Defence Academy and Ministry of Defence
- To deliver inspirational teaching and adopt research informed teaching
- To design and be responsible for the contents of specific areas of teaching and learning
- To develop programmes for the MOD’s defence engagement agenda building on the University’s experience
- To support capacity building and wider influence activities of the Defence Academy’s Defence Engagement teams
- To undertake academic duties to deliver high quality teaching, student learning support and assessment
- To support and comply with the University teaching quality assurance standards and procedures
Additional Duties
- To make a contribution to the leadership and management of the School including supporting early career staff and developing new collaborative activities
- To participate in relevant professional/advisory activities
- To undertake external commitments which reflect and enhance the reputation of the University
- To comply with the University’s Health and Safety policy and act as an exemplar
- To conduct line management duties as appropriate, including holding performance development reviews.
The Ideal Candidate
- The post holder will have a key impact on the University as a thought leader in the IDE domain
- Appropriate experience through either an academic role or in a governmental, Ministry of Defence, public sector or related industry as a consultant or analyst specialising in IDE, with potential to develop in the academic environment.
- A track record of high quality research publications
- Exceptional abilities in leading and attracting external funds for internationally leading research
- Experience of collaborative research involving academics from other disciplines and/or users
- Proven experience providing vision, leadership and support in the development of research
- An international reputation for expertise and research in subjects relevant to the defence engagement agenda
- A willingness to travel both within the UK and overseas as required
